Are We Travelling Based On Instagrammability?

I know I’m not the only one that’s guilty of picking a holiday on how picturesque it is. Quite often I see images on social media, mainly Instagram of a bloggers trip and the stunning photos they took. Theres been dozens of times I’ve looked up flights and hotels straight after to plan a trip for myself and if thats not done right away then it becomes added to my list of places I want to visit purely on how pretty they look on Instagram or Pinterest.

I booked a trip to Budapest recently and my dad asked me why I wanted to go there and I paused as I didn’t really have a good answer, the only thing I could think to say was I’ve seen it’s a really pretty place and it’s always been on my list of destinations to visit. This got me thinking how much social media really influences my decision and many others. I really don’t know that much about Budapest and didn’t even look in depth to what there is to do there but I’ve read articles and seen many photos so it stuck out as a place I felt I would love to visit. Schofields recently ran a survey and I found the results that came back interesting; 40% of millennials pick their travel destination based on how pretty it will look on Instagram. Although this is a high number honestly I’m a little shocked it’s not over 50%. With bloggers on the rise and everyone wanting a photogenic feed these days I would have thought the numbers would be a lot higher.

Although I’m a little sad that no one is fused about sightseeing as much – only 3.9% pick their travel based on this. I don’t think this is an issue, it’s just something that’s happening as society and technology is changing. Social media is growing and the information on it is becoming a huge influence to every user and to be honest I think If a place looks superior on Instagram is most likely is.

So do you choose your travel destination based on it’s Instammability? Let me know your favourite place you’ve been to!

Interesting! I never would have thought people selected vacation destinations based on instagrammability…I suppose because I’m not one of those people who would pick a vacation destination based on how pretty a place will look on instagram. Not that my reasoning behind selecting destinations is any more or less valid than instagrammability. My first real vacation during adulthood was last year, and my husband and I visited Maine in the US, and I think we visited because airfaire to Maine was the cheapest compared to the rest of the states. That’s…literally it. It ended up being one of the BEST vacations I have ever taken though, and can’t wait to go back some day.

This is so relatable! I went to Copenhagen in May and when asked why, I was not able to answer! I just knew I wanted to go to those colorful houses… for Instagram ahah! but also that it was a gorgeous city!

I don’t actually tend to pick places based on seeing them on other peoples instagrams – honestly, as a student I mainly pick based on cheapness haha. The place does, however, have to be pretty and I absolutely love walking around and site seeing… I’m shocked so little people are fussed about it! I went to Budapest as well but last year, and I absolutely loved it. However, this year my favourite place has been Morocco.
