I know I’m not the only one that’s guilty of picking a holiday on how picturesque it is. Quite often I see images on social media, mainly Instagram of a bloggers trip and the stunning photos they took. Theres been dozens of times I’ve looked up flights and hotels straight after to plan a trip for myself and if thats not done right away then it becomes added to my list of places I want to visit purely on how pretty they look on Instagram or Pinterest.
I booked a trip to Budapest recently and my dad asked me why I wanted to go there and I paused as I didn’t really have a good answer, the only thing I could think to say was I’ve seen it’s a really pretty place and it’s always been on my list of destinations to visit. This got me thinking how much social media really influences my decision and many others. I really don’t know that much about Budapest and didn’t even look in depth to what there is to do there but I’ve read articles and seen many photos so it stuck out as a place I felt I would love to visit. Schofields recently ran a survey and I found the results that came back interesting; 40% of millennials pick their travel destination based on how pretty it will look on Instagram. Although this is a high number honestly I’m a little shocked it’s not over 50%. With bloggers on the rise and everyone wanting a photogenic feed these days I would have thought the numbers would be a lot higher.
Although I’m a little sad that no one is fused about sightseeing as much – only 3.9% pick their travel based on this. I don’t think this is an issue, it’s just something that’s happening as society and technology is changing. Social media is growing and the information on it is becoming a huge influence to every user and to be honest I think If a place looks superior on Instagram is most likely is.
